selfishly, i have to say - DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH ROOM THERE IS FOR MY THOUGHTS WHEN I TOOK A STEP BACK FROM EVERY ONE ELSE'S THOUGHTS? A LOT BUDDY, I HAVE A LOT GOING ON.
Hannah you majorly inspired my insta/tiktok break that I began…20 minutes ago!! I’ve definitely been feeling like I’m off kilter in understanding myself because of the constant input so I’m hoping this will help. Also the ads. I swear I almost buy something once an hour lmao. 🤣🤪
ah! i'm so glad to hear. i have a friend who is also taking a social break and she said she could've written this post herself, ha. it's good to know we're not alone!
STOPPPPPPP. i'd say twins, but i valiantly finished season 19 on saturday, and suddenly i am floored (the same way i was when i initially quit social media) at how much time i have for things.
YES. I want my attention back. feeling inspired by this post. I'd be so curious for more thoughts on maintaining friendships with long distance friends that are currently sustained through sharing reels/memes that remind you of those friends. that's my biggest hang up right now.
ooh that's a good question and i don't know if i have a total right fit. i'll give you my three initial thoughts that are maybe not helpful, but SHARING ANYWAYS:
* pivot from sharing reels/memes to looking for things in your every day life that remind you of those people. or keep one social media platform that doesn't leave you in scroll land (for me, it's twitter) and then make a group chat around tweets.
* have a monthly / quarterly powerpoint night, where you zoom and do a lil update on things / memes / topics of conversation. i think that's cute and fun!
* this is maybe a bridge too far, but doing an activity with buddies - long distance or not!! - that requires a group chat can be fun! i watch survivor every week with my remote co-workers, and i'm in a fantasy hockey league with friends where the group chat is incredible.
those are my immediate thoughts, but i'll be curious to see what you end up doing!
totally understand if these aren't a right fit for you!!
I love all of these ideas. I'm going to save them and explore how to incorporate them and get my friends on board! some ideas might work for some friends and not for others. thank you!
Here, here! I have experienced and am experiencing much of this, too!
I enjoy that spending money becomes simply a matter of — “what do I want or need?” and knowing the answers to that are ENTIRELY altered when I’m fed by social media.
There’s so much more I love when I’m away, really and truly.
mmmmmm the "there's so much i love when i'm away, really and truly." yes! in this break, i'm frequently remembering the fullness that I have everything I need and i get to just bask in the gratitude of it (80% of the time. on monday, i have a 20% of the time where i was in a bad mood and saw nothing good. ha.) glad you're feeling the same!
One thing that has drastically changed my relationship with social media is to only scroll my “following” feed on IG. It reminds me of the “old days” on IG. For those that don’t know how? Upper left of the app click the word Instagram and then select following. You can narrow it down even more by choosing favorites, if you have a selection of favorites.
ooh, this is good, thanks for sharing! this might have to be something i put in place - with a good culling of my following feed... if i go back. (i'm starting to debate not, ah!) the few times i have prioritized that, i've loved it - it just feels like the app has moved too far away from what i really loved (static images and long, meaningful captions) and i can feel my attention span leave me when i'm on the app. i want to find a balance and discipline, i just fear i won't. (emotions dump on you, so sorry!)
AH. I LOVE YOU.
“I feel released from the pressure of knowing how everyone is all the time.” YES.

Congrats on all the positives so far 💜
I absolutely love this.
My hang up is my illness. It’s hard to fight scrolling when I’m already in bed trying to forget pain.
Thank you so much for sharing, this ABSOLUTELY resonates

Not me also on my social media break also using greys anatomy when I miss the scroll 😭

I hate that it’s almost all reels now. The static images and long posts was definitely my favorite IG era. Now it’s substack.
